Students ’ revealed preferences and ranking of school quality ∗
نویسنده
چکیده
I present a revealed preference ranking of school quality. This is helpful to pin down between two or more schools the one that attracts high ability students at the lowest additional cost of quality. Available school rankings don’t capture the heterogenous effects that an increase in school quality has on the choices of students with different characteristics. To do so, I obtain the ranking by considering schooling as a differentiated product market and for simplicity fees are regulated and admission is not selective. Then I compute the ranking by using estimates from a multinomial model of school choice. An example using a dataset of Italian college graduates suggests two findings. First the ranking I propose differs from average quality rankings because it captures average as well as marginal information that is contained in the revealed preferences of students. Second, the ranking sharply differs from rankings that newspapers publish and the maximum discrepancy in the ranking of one college is 17 positions. JEL Classification: C25, I21, I23, J24, L13, L15

Ranking Publications : To Manipulate or Not to Manipulate ∗
We develop a multi-period theoretical model to characterize the relationship between a publication that ranks universities and prospective attendees – high school students – who might view the ranking and use it to help decide which university to attend. We assert that published rankings not only offer information about the objective quality of universities, but also have an effect on the prest...
متن کاملHigh-School Students’ Dominant Learning Styles Preferences in Learning English: How are “Good Language Learners” Different from the Ordinary Ones?
Many researchers have investigated different aspects of learning styles. Nevertheless, few studies have considered interactions between the notions of learning styles and “good language learners’” achievement. The present study aimed at exploring dominant learning style preferences by senior high-school students and comparing their preferences with those by “good language learners”. To this goa...

We measure the social preferences of a sample of US medical students and compare their preferences with those of the general population sampled in the American Life Panel (ALP). We also compare the medical students with a subsample of highly educated, wealthy ALP subjects as well as elite law school students and undergraduate students. We further associate the heterogeneity in social preference...
متن کاملA Robust Redesign of High School Match
Many school districts allow students to report their preference rankings over schools and assign as many students as possible to their reported favorite schools. However, this well-intended assignment policy, known as the Boston mechanism, creates incentives for students to misreport their true preferences. I consider the problem of estimating students’ preference parameters with reported ranki...
متن کاملAssigning more students to their top choices: A comparison of tie-breaking rules
School districts that implement stable matchings face various decisions that affect students’ assignments to schools. We study properties of the rank distribution of students with random preferences when schools use different tie-breaking rules to rank equivalent students. Under a single tie-breaking rule, where all schools use the same ranking, a constant fraction of students are assigned to o...
